This Smoked Old Fashioned is a bold, smooth bourbon cocktail with just the right balance of sweetness, bitters, citrus, and smoky flavor. It takes everything people love about a classic Old Fashioned and gives it a backyard-bar upgrade with a kiss of smoke that feels fancy without being fussy.
It is perfect for National Bourbon Day, Father’s Day, summer cookouts, steak nights, tailgates, or any evening where “just one drink” turns into showing everyone your new favorite cocktail trick. Rich bourbon, aromatic bitters, orange, and smoke come together in a glass that looks impressive, tastes even better, and might make you feel like you should be wearing a leather apron.
Ingredients
- 2 oz bourbon
-
1/4 oz simple syrup (made with Whiskey Smoked Sugar)
- 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash orange bitters, optional
- Orange peel
- Cocktail cherry, optional
- Large ice cube
- Wood chips, wood dust, or cocktail smoking chips
Directions
- Add bourbon, simple syrup, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice.
- Stir for about 20 seconds, or until chilled and lightly diluted.
- Place a large ice cube in a rocks glass.
- Strain the cocktail over the ice.
- Express the orange peel over the glass, then drop it in with a cocktail cherry if using.
- Use a cocktail smoker or smoking lid to add smoke to the glass. Let it sit for 20–30 seconds so the smoke can infuse the drink.
- Remove the lid, take in that smoky aroma, and enjoy responsibly.
